Today's Rijeka Synagogue is the successor of the building constructed in 1903 that disappeared in the Second World War. Although it is located just a few hundred metres from the one that disappeared, the synagogue that is today used by the city’s Jewish community survived the war without being damaged. It was built in 1932, and when compared to the previous building, is a smaller building with an unexpected architectural appearance. Today it is the only temple of its kind in Croatia from the modernist period. It was designed by the architects Vittorio Angyal and Pietro Fabbro. The lines of the building are simple, with the elements of clear modernist spirit as well as of the Mediterranean influence and hints of Art Deco. In 2008 the reconstruction of the synagogue was terminated and the building assumed its initial appearance. Among other things, its two altars and the Ark of the Covenant were restored. The Rijeka Synagogue is the only building constructed for this purpose in Croatia and it still has its original ritual function.
